Requirements Are Vital

At the start of any project there is an opportunity to capture, document and understand the client's requirements before any development takes place. This is the only time mistakes can be rectified before they happen.

Requirements do not just specify functionality; they cover all aspects of the product. For example, the requirements process should provide answers to the following questions:

How fast the does the product need to be?
How reliable does the product need to be?
How easy is the product to learn and use?
How many things can the product do at the same time?
How many different tasks can the product perform?
How will the product evolve?

Unfortunately, the requirements process is often ignored or skimped in the rush to begin the "real" work. As the true nature and scope of the requirements become apparent, much of the early work must be discarded, at a significant cost to the business. It is not uncommon for these overlooked requirements to only become apparent during a demonstration to the end user!
